Roma and Jews were the scapegoats in the 1930s and 40s and they are still scapegoats today. But in Britain, the current focus is on Muslims. Many of my Muslim friends, particularly women, are subjected to patronising, threatening, humiliating and even violent behavior on a regular basis but none of them are cowed by this. The terrible treatment of the Windrush generation has exposed the racism of the current government and I think we need a vocal and active campaign to stand up against all forms of racism and Islamophobia in this country.
At SWR school, a boy who was a couple of years older than me, and a bit younger than you, set up a Shatzi Party. It was an attempt to pull some of his associates into a Fascist grouping. I stood up against him and got a bloody nose when he punched me for not opening the back door of the school for him. When he left school he joined the police. He was a racist bully and I shudder to think about the potential abuse he might have administered behind the protective shield of his uniform.
I hope you are well. I'll be in Frimley in a couple of weeks, visiting my other half's parents. I'll also be visiting my sister in Tetbury soon. I must get hold of your books. I'm an avid reader and I'm sure I will enjoy them. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
